Bilberry
Vaccinium myrtillus is a perennial shrub native to Northern Europe, North America, and Canada. It bears a berry reminiscent of the American Blueberry Vaccinium corymbosum; however, the species Vaccinium myrtillus is characterized by more concentrated antioxidant pigments in its fruit, which are smaller in size compared to those of the American variety. Other distinctions include that Bilberries have dark blue and strongly fragrant flesh while American blueberries feature white and mildly fragrant flesh. The Bilberry grows as individual fruits on low bushes typically found in the wild in wooded areas of the Northern Hemisphere; conversely, American blueberries thrive in large bushes with multiple fruits at once. Although both species were traditionally used for culinary and medicinal purposes across history, they are more commonly found as wild plants whereas American blueberries can be cultivated.
Herbal Usage of Bilberry
Given that Bilberries possess a richer flavor and higher concentration of vitamins compared to their domesticated counterpart, they excel in making syrups and Bilberry wine. The plant is renowned for its high content of anthocyanosidesa group of antioxidants that have been identified within it. Over fifteen different types of these constituents are recognized, with extensive research concentrating on their potential to protect tissues from oxidative stress associated with aging and promoting healthy visual acuity.
