CEO of GLLG, Glenn Llopis delves into the significance of personalization in healthcare beyond just genomics, highlighting how it should ext far beyond focusing solely on treating diseases.
Often, discussions around personalized care in medicine revolve around tloring treatments based on genetic information. While this is a significant leap forward, a more comprehensive view would include recognizing people as complex beings with unique experiences and perspectives that contribute to their health journey.
Many sectors within healthcare are still fling at personalization when they reduce patients to disease categories rather than acknowledging them as individuals facing life-altering challenges.
In May 2023, top industry leaders convened for a two-day summit med at addressing the critical challenge of personalization in an increasingly standardized field. The event featured thought-provoking talks and panel discussions covering topics such as patient-centric care, consumerism in healthcare, data analytics, digital transformation, inclusive healthcare systems, and population health management.
This is part one of a five-part series that will distill key insights from the summit to highlight the importance of personalized care beyond DNA.
In this context, RBC Capital Markets highlighted the biggest disruptive force in recent years: the shift of power dynamics towards individuals. Nik Modi, an analyst at RBC, emphasized how healthcare providers should employ more preventative approaches and engage with communities on a deeper level by understanding the unique experiences of each individual - essentially treating people like consumers.
Modi's message was clear, echoing that insights from consumer product experts are crucial for healthcare because patients are essentially consumers. He urged providers to move beyond conventional practices and adopt new methods to connect better with those they serve in more holistic ways.
The first panel discussion centered on the personal experiences of three cancer survivors who navigated through a system that sometimes struggled to see them as individuals rather than disease entities. This interaction sparked insights into how health systems could enhance inclusivity by treating patients holistically, considering their medical, emotional, and psychological needs.
Cindy Finch, LCSW, heartlung cancer survivor, Dr. Shaden Marzouk, GenesisCare U.S.'s President, Lorna Rodriguez, MD., Ph.D from City of Hope's Division of Gynecologic Oncology discussed how organizations should move beyond treating patients based on their biological profiles and consider the full spectrum of uniqueness.
DeAnna Minus-Vincent, Managing Director at The Outcomes Architect, took this a step further by discussing not just inviting diverse voices into healthcare conversations but also creating environments where they are empowered to contribute meaningfully. She highlighted the importance of fostering diversity within organizations for better outcomes and innovation.
As we progress through this series, we will uncover more barriers that healthcare leaders must overcome in operationalizing personalization strategies effectively. We'll explore transformation challenges, embrace change as an opportunity rather than a threat, and understand how consumerism exts beyond clinical to non-clinical aspects of patient care.
By revisiting these discussions and implementing the insights gned, healthcare organizations can shift towards a more -centric approach that prioritizes individual needs, experiences, and preferences.
